Gym Diaries

It was indeed hard to find a good personal trainer. I had only been going to the gym for a few days and had asked around. All the trainers were fine. But somehow none of them appealed to my funny way of looking at things!

There was a beefed up Russian guy who looked straight out of a bond movie, a British trainer whose body looked so perfect that my heart ached ☹, and then there was a Indian trainer who could have qualified as Mr. India, an athletic looking Australian trainer looked as if she was heading to Mount Everest for a climb! Who do I choose? Who can make me run and pump iron?

I lived with the dilemma for days. Coming from Bombay, I was looking for someone who would share my love for street food, and Amir Khan!

I was not looking for a life partner – but in my opinion your personal trainer becomes an integral part of your life. You swear, sweat and shout at this person day in and day out. This one person ensures that they will respect and understand your body no matter what you say to them. Now where can I find such a person? I even thought of giving an ad on Shadi.com !!!

And then I saw Vaishali. That evening I was heading for a swim and the gym was overflowing with people. In the evening, the gym converts into a makeshift bar - but without alcohol of course. Reemeber we are in Dubai J Good-looking men and women in their designer wear are everywhere, chatting loudly over thumping music and openly flirting.

In all that chaos, I saw a petit Indian girl training an elderly Indian woman. I could faintly hear her, “ Chalo re, ruko mat ” Bingo!!! I had indeed found my woman. It took me a few days to talk to her, but I was right – she was perfect for me.

Vaishali, is a typical Bombay girl with an incredible gift of making people at home. She listened to my long list of complaints and reservation with a smile and replied with only one word, “Dekhenge” meaning we will see!

This lovely Marathi girl from Thane has worked her way up to becoming one of the most sought after personal trainer. She trains high profile people and is busier than a minister. And yet she talks of missing celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi, eating a meal with her family in Mumbai and how she spent her childhood in a small home fighting with her younger brother. Her needs are few, complaints are none and she always welcomes me with a smile.

So I hired her services few weeks back and since then she has become an integral part of my life. She knows my left knee hurts, and that I hate doing Cardio, I am lazy and I respond well to shouting!!!

She tolerates my jabbering and laughs at my not so funny jokes. In a subtle way she has been pushing me harder every day to walk more, to jump more and mainly to accept myself more.

Just when I think she is becoming a good friend and I can bully her into finishing the tedious workout early, she goes, “ Bas kya? Ruko mat….Chalo… Chalo…..Move it….Move …It….Shivani you can do it!”

Big talent always comes in small packages! Thank you Vaishali
